Solid State Drives (SSD)

In storage solutions,SSDs are used in three different scenarios:
– ascache memory (read and write cache) to speed up access to RAID systems or software defined storage,
– as fastest storage level in anauto-tiering solution, in which data is stored on different fast media according to criteria such as access frequency or age, or
– asAllFlash or FullFlash Storage with particularly high data access rates, especially for databases or in server virtualization.
The latter is a very strongly growing field of application due to falling prices and the increasing capacity of SSDs.
Important criteria for the selection are the „Drive Writes per Day“ (DWPD), i.e. the maximum complete refilling of the disks per day during their warranty period. If it is exceeded, the SSD can reach the end of its life before the actual warranty period expires – and the warranty expires. However, this is only critical for cache disks, when all data of a large system flows through the SSD.

SSD & NVMe: High-Performance Storage Solutions for Your Business – EUROstor
SSDs (Solid State Drives) and especially NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) disks have revolutionized the storage landscape, offering businesses a significant performance boost. EUROstor offers a wide range of SSD and NVMe-based storage solutions for various requirements.
Use Cases for SSDs in Storage:
- Cache Storage (Read and Write Cache): SSDs serve as a fast cache to significantly accelerate access to traditional RAID systems or Software-Defined Storage (SDS). Both read and write accesses are optimized through the cache, resulting in a noticeable improvement in overall performance.
- Fastest Storage Tier in Auto-Tiering: In auto-tiering, data is automatically distributed across storage media with different speeds based on criteria such as access frequency or age. SSDs and NVMe disks form the fastest tier (Tier 0), where the most frequently accessed and time-critical data is stored.
- All-Flash or Full-Flash Storage: In all-flash systems, only SSDs or NVMe disks are used as storage media. This enables extremely high access rates and IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second), which is particularly advantageous for database-intensive applications and server virtualization. With decreasing prices and increasing capacities, this is a rapidly growing area.
NVMe: The Turbo for SSDs:
NVMe is a communication protocol specifically designed for flash storage, offering significantly higher performance compared to older interfaces like SATA. NVMe SSDs utilize the PCIe bus to establish a direct connection to the CPU, minimizing latency and maximizing data throughput.
Key Criteria for Choosing SSDs:
An important criterion when selecting SSDs is the „Drive Writes per Day“ (DWPD) rating. DWPD indicates how many times an SSD can be completely rewritten during its warranty period. Exceeding this value can significantly shorten the lifespan of the SSD, potentially voiding the warranty. This aspect is especially relevant for cache drives, as all system traffic is routed through these SSDs. For other use cases such as auto-tiering or all-flash systems, this value is less critical, but still worth considering.
The Benefits of SSDs and NVMe:
- Extremely High Performance: Significantly faster access times compared to traditional HDDs.
- Low Latency: Faster response times for applications.
- High IOPS: Enables processing large amounts of input and output commands per second.
- Durability: More resistant to shocks and vibrations than HDDs.
- Lower Energy Consumption: Compared to HDDs.
Application Areas:
- Databases: Accelerating database queries and transactions.
- Virtualization: Optimizing the performance of virtual machines.
- High-Performance Computing (HPC): Handling demanding computational tasks.
- Content Creation and Editing: Fast editing of large files such as videos and images.
